No Power, No AI: The Energy Challenge We’re Ignoring

Like it or not, AI is going to shape the future of how we live and work. But there’s a reality we don’t talk about enough… AI doesn’t just run on clever algorithms or good intentions. It runs on power. And a lot of it.

“Data centres already consumer about 1.5% of global power; this is projected to more than double by 2030.” (AI Tool Discovery, 2026)

As the UK pushes forward with its ambition to become a leader in AI, one challenge is becoming impossible to ignore: energy.

AI might feel like a software revolution, but in truth, it’s an industrial one. Data centres, high-performance computing, and the electrification of transport and industry are all driving demand for electricity to levels we haven’t seen before. If we’re serious about scaling AI, we need an energy system that can keep up.; that’s where nuclear comes in.

Why Nuclear Matters More Than Ever

Nuclear power does something very few other energy sources can: it provides consistent, always-on electricity. For AI infrastructure, that’s not a “nice to have” but an essential.

But reliability is only part of the story. Nuclear also offers:

  1. Zero carbon emissions during operation, supporting the UK’s net-zero ambitions
  2. High energy density, meaning a significant amount of power from a relatively small footprint
  3. Predictable, long-term costs, compared to volatile fossil fuel markets
  4. Long operational lifespans, enabling long-term national infrastructure planning

Put simply, nuclear gives us clean energy without compromising on stability, something that becomes increasingly important as our energy system evolves.

Demand Is Set to Surge… Not Just from AI

AI isn’t the only factor pushing electricity demand upwards.

The UK’s move towards electrified transport, from cars and vans through to HGVs  will add substantial demand. At the same time, heavy industries such as steel, chemicals, and manufacturing are shifting away from fossil fuels towards electricity and hydrogen.

Taken together, this transition is set to fundamentally reshape the energy system. Electricity demand is expected to be around 50% higher by 2035, and could double or more by 2050, as more sectors electrify (House of Commons Committee).

Renewables will absolutely play a key role. But without a stable, scalable backbone like nuclear, the system risks becoming more volatile, more expensive, and more reliant on imported energy, something recent years have shown comes with real challenges.

Small Modular Reactors… A Game Changer

One of the most exciting developments in this space is the rise of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

These next-generation nuclear technologies are smaller, quicker to deploy, and far more flexible than traditional large-scale plants. Crucially, they could be located closer to demand, whether that’s industrial hubs or even data centres themselves.

It’s not hard to imagine a future where major AI clusters in Manchester, Cambridge, London, Edinburgh are supported by dedicated, locally-based nuclear power.

Not long ago, that might have sounded far-fetched. Today, it’s quickly becoming a realistic… and a necessity.

A Strategic Opportunity for the UK

If the UK wants to lead in AI, it also needs to lead in energy.

Countries that can secure reliable, clean, and scalable power will have a clear advantage in the next wave of technological development. The UK already has deep nuclear expertise and a strong heritage in the sector;, that is gives us a real opportunity to get ahead.

Expanding nuclear isn’t just about meeting energy demand. It’s about:

  1. Strengthening energy independence
  2. Supporting long-term economic growth
  3. Enabling AI and digital infrastructure to scale confidently
  4. Delivering on climate commitments

Looking Ahead

The message is simple: if we want to unlock the full potential of AI and the wider electrified economy around it, we need to think seriously about how we power it.

Nuclear isn’t the only part of the solution. But without it, the UK risks falling short.
