Demand Is Set to Surge… Not Just from AI
AI isn’t the only factor pushing electricity demand upwards.
The UK’s move towards electrified transport, from cars and vans through to HGVs will add substantial demand. At the same time, heavy industries such as steel, chemicals, and manufacturing are shifting away from fossil fuels towards electricity and hydrogen.
Taken together, this transition is set to fundamentally reshape the energy system. Electricity demand is expected to be around 50% higher by 2035, and could double or more by 2050, as more sectors electrify (House of Commons Committee).
Renewables will absolutely play a key role. But without a stable, scalable backbone like nuclear, the system risks becoming more volatile, more expensive, and more reliant on imported energy, something recent years have shown comes with real challenges.
Small Modular Reactors… A Game Changer
One of the most exciting developments in this space is the rise of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
These next-generation nuclear technologies are smaller, quicker to deploy, and far more flexible than traditional large-scale plants. Crucially, they could be located closer to demand, whether that’s industrial hubs or even data centres themselves.
It’s not hard to imagine a future where major AI clusters in Manchester, Cambridge, London, Edinburgh are supported by dedicated, locally-based nuclear power.
Not long ago, that might have sounded far-fetched. Today, it’s quickly becoming a realistic… and a necessity.
