Nuclear

From business transformation and commercial excellence to innovation, supply chain development and holistic category management, 4C work alongside nuclear organisations, in both the private and public sectors, to deliver their objectives with pace, enhance their efficiency and effectiveness, and provide award winning outcomes.

Research & Development

Nuclear research and development in the UK provides focus on advancing nuclear technology, enhancing safety, addressing climate change through low-carbon energy solutions and providing sustainable and secure energy independence.  Research institutions are collaborating with the private sector to develop the next-generation reactors whilst the UK is also investing in fusion energy as a potential long-term energy source. At 4C we work with both the public & private sectors to help address many of the key challenges, taking bold and innovative action to drive and continuously enhance value.

Power Generation

UK Nuclear power generation plays a pivotal and growing role in providing low-carbon electricity, currently contributing approximately 15% of the nation’s energy mix. However, after 3 decades of underinvestment, the UK has aging reactors and hence the government focus on maintaining and modernising existing plants while promoting major new infrastructure developments, such as Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C. This approach helps ensure short and long-term energy security whilst continuing to reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions. 4C’s nuclear experts bring valuable insights, knowledge and experience to the sector and help nuclear leaders, at all levels, to enhance their commercial, operational and supply chain performance, improve efficiency and provide a robust platform for continuous improvement.

New builds

The UK’s new nuclear power stations are a critical part of the nation’s energy strategy, aiming to provide over 35% of our energy requirements by 2050 whilst playing a central role in attaining carbon neutrality through increasing our proportion of low-carbon electricity generation. Key current projects include Hinkley Point C, which is under construction and expected to power 6 million homes and avoid 9 million tonnes of CO2 each year, whilst work on Sizewell C has commenced and which will meet 7% of the nations energy needs for at least 60 years. These new builds are designed to enhance energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and meet growing electricity demand while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. At 4C we offer a range of services that can help ensure these, and many other, challenging new nuclear projects are delivered on time, safely, reliably and provide value for money for the country.

Decommissioning & waste management

The UK is a world leader in nuclear decommissioning and waste management, critical components of the nuclear energy sector. The UK has established an envied and comprehensive framework to safely dismantle retired nuclear facilities and manage radioactive waste. Leading organisations, such as the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), oversee the UK’s decommissioning projects and ensure compliance with safety regulations with the focus remaining on minimising environmental impact, safeguarding public health, and continuing to advance technologies for future waste management challenges. 4C work with a range of industry organisations, to help solve these, and other industry specific challenges, helping ensure that solutions remain affordable, effective and continuously available.

Transportation

Nuclear transportation in the UK is an essential but unsung part of the nuclear supply chain and ensures the safe movement of radioactive materials, including spent fuel and nuclear waste, across land and sea. Strict regulations and confidentiality govern the transport process to ensure safety and security whilst specialised vehicles and containers are used to minimise risks during transit. In this arena continuous monitoring, risk assessment and precise planning are required to help maintain public confidence and the safe transportation of nuclear materials across the country. At 4C we provide significant expertise to help optimise and enhance these solutions, whilst ensuring that organisations operate efficiently and provide value for money within an everchanging landscape.
