BACKGROUND
A major UK infrastructure organisation, responsible for managing and developing a national transport network, has made sustainability a core priority.
The organisation is committed to creating a low-emission, resilient service and needed procurement to play a more strategic role in driving sustainability. Achieving this required not only new processes and capabilities, but also a shift towards a more collaborative, sustainability-led culture within the commercial and procurement teams and across the wider supply chain.
the challenge
The organisation lacked a clear set of measurable sustainability goals for its supply chain and needed stronger mechanisms to track progress. Procurement teams required enhanced sustainability capability, and supplier engagement varied significantly across categories and regions. Limited data maturity made it difficult to benchmark performance, assess risk, or demonstrate impact.
SOLUTION
4C developed and supported the implementation of a sustainability transformation roadmap over 36 months:
- Defined measurable sustainability KPIs and integrated them into procurement processes
- Designed a supplier engagement model tailored to both large suppliers and SMEs
- Embedded sustainability criteria into sourcing, evaluation and contract management frameworks
- Created a learning & development programme to upskill commercial and procurement teams and enhance cross-functional alignment
- Strengthened reporting and insight generation to improve data maturity and drive informed decision-making
